Remembering My Roots

I’ve been blessed and inspired by two of the most important women in my life: my mother and my grandmother.

When my maternal grandmother Brenda first immigrated to the U.S. from her home island of Barbados, she worked as a cook for the 11th president of New York University, James McNaughton Hester, and his family. Grandma never dreamed that any of her own family would get to attend NYU, but to her immense joy, I graduated with my MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business in 2016. I’m grateful for my grandmother’s continued tenacity even now as a nonagenarian. And I draw inspiration from the solid work ethic and savvy financial decisions she set as an example for our family.

As a child, I literally grew up in my mother Beverley’s hair salon, first playing tea party and eventually helping to run the business. As an adult, I attended my mom’s beauty school alma mater as a legacy and still hold my active cosmetology license. My experiences working with my mom helped shape my worldview and I often think back to the salon as my first introduction to both beauty & entrepreneurship. I have experienced firsthand the challenges and aspirations of small business proprietors, and have an immense amount of empathy and respect for folks currently on that journey.

My Story

I've always straddled the line between entrepreneurship and corporate executive leadership. While working at major multinational corporations like Johnson & Johnson and Sephora, I managed NEREKdesigns, an on-site hair and makeup business for events and started my first iteration of The Peculiar CMO as a brand management and marketing consultancy. 

What I’ve most enjoyed throughout my career is working with visionary, values-based leaders to help them bring their vision to life. Equipped with an MBA from New York University's Stern School of Business and my mastery of blending the strategic and tactical, my focus with The Peculiar CMO is on fostering sustainable, high-performing marketing strategies that the organizations I partner with can actually afford and execute.
